Our Church

The Church of the Assumption of Our Lady was the second of the rosary churches opened in Cork. The site was blessed and the sod turned on New Year’s Eve, 1953.

To much celebration, the church was opened on Easter Sunday, 1956. The first mass was said after the opening ceremony by Most Rev. Dr. Lucey, Bishop of Cork and Ross. Canon Barret, who had driven the project forward, was the district’s first pastor. Ballyphehane, at that time, was not yet a parish.

Many locals were involved in the building of the church, as you can see from the photos. It was, arguably, the first building to really unite Ballyphehane as a community in its own right.
